What is automobile insurance coverage?

An auto insurance policy is an agreement between you and your insurance company, in which your premiums cover several things.  They cover your financial responsibility if you cause injury to others.  Premiums also cover property damage, either your car, the other car(s), and even property besides vehicles themselves.  Requirements can vary by state.

Am I required to have automobile insurance?

Florida is a no-fault state.  What that means is that certain coverage, personal injury protection and property damage coverage, is required by the state of Florida if you are the titled owner of a vehicle.  In addition, people commonly have monthly car payments, and your finance company requires that you have insurance to repair damage to your car.  

What are the coverages?

        Liability Coverage

            Bodily Injury - Compensation for losses resulting from injuries you cause.
            Property damage - Repair costs or value of property you have damaged

            You, your relatives living at your residence, or someone else driving your car with your permission are
            covered by your policy when driving your car or other people's cars with their permission.  The injured
            party can receive payments for damages related to death, injury, medical care, loss of income, loss of
            services, or property damage.  You are covered for certain defense costs, cost of bail bonds, and
            emergency first aid to other.

        Uninsured Motorist Coverage 

            This coverage protects you, your family, and passengers in you car against losses caused by an
            at-fault driver who has no liability coverage, or by a hit-and-run driver.   You, relatives living at your
            residence, and covered passengers can receive payments for losses related to injury, medical care,
            death, or legal expenses.  Coverage options vary by state. 
      
        Personal injury protection coverage / medical payments

            This coverage protects you, your family, and passengers in your car against losses regardless of who
            was at fault.  In addition, you and your covered relatives are protected in the event you are pedestrians
            injured in an automobile accident.  PIP is a required coverage in the state of Florida.  It may not be
            rejected.  You, your relatives living at your residence, and covered passengers can receive payments   
            for medical and funeral expenses, loss of income, and loss of services.  Coverages vary by state.

 
       Collision Coverage

            This coverage insures your vehicle, and pays for repair or replacement of your vehicle up to its actual 
            cash value, minus your deductible.  You may choose from a range of deductibles.

       Comprehensive Coverage

            This coverage repairs damage to your car from different non-collision events including theft, vandalism
            road debris, fire, hail, or impact with an animal.  You are covered for repair or replacement of your  
            vehicle up to its actual cash value, minus your deductible.  You may choose from a range of deductibles.

        Emergency Road Service

            This coverage pays for towing, delivery of gas, oil, loaned battery, or change of tires.  This coverage
            operates without regard to fault

        Rental Reimbursement
            
            This coverage pays you when you rent a car from a rental agency or garage.  This benefit is paid without
             regard to fault for a comprehensive or collision type loss.

What discounts are available?

Many auto insurance companies offer discounts for air bags, anti-theft systems, and anti-lock brakes.  In addition, many companies offer discounts if you insure more than one vehicle with the same company.  Your deductible amounts for collision and comprehensive coverage can also affect your premium.  Other discounts can be available with different companies, including driving quality, defensive driver, good student, driver training, homeowner, full payment, and paperless billing / document delivery.  Many company use credit in determing rates, and discounts vary by company.
